What is post-concussion syndrome?

Post-concussion syndrome is a condition that simply refers to patients who have suffered from a concussion continuing to suffer the consequences for a longer period of time than is considered to be the standard recovery period after a concussion.

What are the symptoms?

There are many symptoms that patients who suffer from post-concussion syndrome may experience. The most commonly reported symptoms are as follows:

  • dizziness
  • headaches
  • memory problems
  • sleep problems
  • concentration problems
  • mood changes
  • difficulty tolerating physical exertion and exercise

What causes post-concussion syndrome?

The exact causes of post-concussion syndrome are unknown. However, patients who have previously experienced or suffered from frequent headaches, anxiety, depression, or attention or learning deficits or disabilities prior to their concussion are at a higher risk of suffering from post-concussion syndrome.

How long does post-concussion syndrome last?

If post-concussion syndrome is left untreated and doesn't receive appropriate and prompt medical attention, it can, unfortunately, last from anywhere between a couple of months to even a couple of years.

How is post-concussion syndrome diagnosed?

There is no definitive test that is used to detect post-concussion syndrome. However, depending on the patients' symptoms presented, the doctor can diagnose the condition in one or more of the following ways:

  • MRI scan
  • CT scan
  • referral to an ENT surgeon to detect cause of dizziness

How is post-concussion syndrome treated?

If the patient is suffering from anxiety, depression, or any other emotional disorder, then referral to a psychologist can be the first line of treatment for post-concussion syndrome. There are many other ways to treat post-concussion syndrome. They include:

  • gentle, light exercise
  • neck therapy
  • medication
  • vestibular therapy

Which specialist treats post-concussion syndrome?

There are, in fact, several medical specialists that are qualified when it comes to the treatment of post-concussion syndrome. These include neurologists, neuropsychologists, personal trainers, as well as physical therapists.

When should I seek immediate medical attention?

If you are experiencing problems with your vision, hearing, and/or memory, you are advised to seek medical help immediately. Patients are encouraged to see their GP if their post-concussion-related symptoms persist for more than two weeks.
